Transportation, Crime, Weather, Other Interesting Facts

Image
While this is an unbeleivable opportunity – there are some downsides. Number one is that I am living in a third world country….which comes along with some of the points I’ve mentioned below. (To any family reading this.. PLEASE DON’T WORRY! I’ll be careful as I possibly can. And remember I’ve been living in Edmonton – Canada’s murder capital, and I’ve made it this far!)

TRANSPORTATION:
Roads tend to be narrow and winding, with many one-lane bridges and blind curves. Heavy freight traffic on major roads in and out of Antananarivo can pose hazards. Vehicles tend to drive in the center of the road unless another vehicle is present. Local practice is to blow the horn before going around a curve, to let others know of your presence. Yay for me getting a driver. Actually…based on my driving record, I could use a driver here….

CRIME:

Armed robberies are on the increase in urban areas, and tourists are a common target. A Canadian national on vacation in Madagascar was killed in an apparent arme…

Some research

Since all I’ve been doing is researching Madgascar for the last few weeks, and many of my family/friends have a bunch of questions, I thought I’d post some info about MG that I found interesting.

The capital of Madagascar is Antananarivo, which has a population of about 1.5 million people. The city that I’m living in is about 500 km away from the capital. It takes about 7 hours to drive, or 45 minutes to fly (the roads are crap!)
Madagascar is the the fourth-largest island in the world
A central chain of high mountains, the Hauts Plateaux, occupies more than half of the main island and is responsible for the marked differences (ethnically, climatically and scenically) between the east and west coasts. The east coast is covered in dense rainforests, and the west coast is mainly savanah.
Much of Madagascar’s flora and fauna is unique to the island. There are 3,000 endemic species of butterfly (I HATE BUTTERFLIES!), lemurs, monkeys, marmots, racoons, sloths, and a huge variety of reptiles, …

Moving... yikes!

First off...I'm moving...

Second, WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW. This is so crazy. I can’t beleive I AM MOVING TO MADAGASCAR. Until a few years ago, I’m not sure if I even know Madagascar existed. I saw the first Disney movie, and that’s pretty much all I knew…. and now, I’m moving there is less than 2 months.
Some facts about this move:
I’ll be living in Tamatave, Toamasina. Its a port on the Indian Ocean I will be living in a “camp” that is basically like an all inclusive resort – has a pool, gym, etc. I will work LONG hours and LONG days – I only get Sundays off – for six weeks straight. I am then on vacation for three weeks. I have the option to come home or to use my travel allowance to travel the world. We fly business class. Yee haw! That’s important since the flight is 26 hrs (and I’m really tall). I have been on all the airlines looking at their business class set up. Some of them have full beds! And we get cool toiletries and sleeping suits for when we fly! I will be doing this …
